The tragic death of Dr Duncan in May 1972 was a catalyst for gay law reform in Australia. The newly appointed lecturer to the Adelaide Law School drowned in the Torrens after being a victim of a homophobia attack.
On 11 September the Adelaide Law School celebrated the 40th anniversary of law reform in South Australia. The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG unveiled the portrait of Dr Duncan that will be placed in the foyer of the Adelaide Law School.
The event was attended by the Chancellor, Rear Admiral The Hon Kevin Scarce AC CSC RAN (Rtd), Vice-Chancellor & President, Professor Warren Bebbington, former Chancellor, The Hon Robert Hill AC, members of the judiciary, profession, the Parliament, leading members of the community and staff and students of the Adelaide Law School.
Professor John Williams, Dean of the Adelaide Law School, said that ‘the event was an important one in the life of the School. The tragic death of Dr Duncan is a reminder of the obligation that law must not themselves discriminate. The memorial to Dr Duncan is a statement of the need to celebrate and encourage diversity at the Adelaide Law School or University.’
The Hon Michael Kirby also announced the establishment of a scholarship in the name of Dr Duncan for students in financial need who have demonstrated commitment to LGBTIQ issues.
